Less than two months ago, the world watched as anti-government protests swept across some of China’s largest cities. In scenes of civil disobedience unseen in China since the Tiananmen Square protests over three decades ago, Chinese citizens took to the streets in defiance of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Reports are now coming out of Beijing that numerous students and young professionals involved in the protests in the capital are being arrested and disappeared.

In a video circulating on Twitter, Cao Zhixin (26), a graduate of Beijing’s Renmin University of China and an editor with a Chinese publisher, speaks out after being arrested and released by Chinese police, correctly predicting that she would soon be rearrested and charged over her involvement in a protest.

In her video statement, Zhixin explains that she is an ordinary citizen who attended what she thought was a mourning event to remember those who had lost their lives. She says that the event was attended by thousands of people who remained orderly and that neither she nor her friends, who also attended, had any conflict with the police.
